CAUCASUS HIDDEN TRAILS |

This tour combines culture with adventure in equal amounts. The mountain landscapes of the South Caucasus are stunning along with the Georgian mountain culture, traditions and everyday life. The tour drives north from Tbilisi to the Khevsureti region’s remote village of Khakhabo. During first days of the tour we also visit Shatili a village with in a stone fortress where villagers live to this day. We will spend one night in one a tower built in the Middle Ages - now a simple private family guesthouse. Tour contains crossing Chaukhi pass (3340m) and camping in Chaukhi valley. After this comes a relaxing night in the comfortable hotel “Stephantsminda” Kazbegi offers the most challenging part of the tour. We walk 7-8 hours to reach the former “Meteo Station” (3680m), a large hut for mountaineers climbing Mt. Kazbek. The scenery is spectacular and the alpine meadows covered with endemic flowers. We trek through narrow gorges and visit medieval villages Khakhabo, Ardoti, Mutso and Shatili the most famous fortified villages in Georgia. During the trek we stay in tents and village houses. Horses carry most of the group and personal luggage and we trek light. The itinerary involves generally from 4 to 8 hours treks a day on normal paths, including crossing mountain pass with some steep slopes but not on difficult terrain. Previous walking experience and good physical shape is essential. |

Outline Itinerary: Day 1: Arrive in Tbilisi. Hotel. Day 2: Tbilisi city tour. Day 3: Early in the morning depart direction to Shatili (khevureti province). Cross “Datvisjvari Pass” 3047m. After 3-4 hours drive from Tbilisi unload the personal luggage and group equipment from the vehicles and trek to village Khakhabo (5 hours walk).Camp at the camp-side by the village. Day 4: After breakfast trek down along the river to the village of Ardoti, continue to the historical fortress of Mutso built in middle ages on the top of the rocky hill and reach the village of Shatili. Overnight at a simple family guesthouse built in 16th century. Day 5: Drive back direction to central Georgia, crossing Datvisjvari Pass and reach village Roshka. The transport will leave us and we continue 2 hours trekking to the camp side by Abudelauri Lakes. Camp. Day 6: A 6-7 hours trek up to Chaukhi Pass (3340m.) crossing it and camp on Chaukhi valley 2550m. Camp. Day 7: Easy relaxing walk on one of the summits of Chaukhi Mountains up to 3500m. Return to the camp-side. Camp. Day 8: Walk down to village Juta. Meet local 4WD vehicle and drive 23km to Kazbegi (1700m). Overnight in Hotel Stephantsminda. Day 9: A 7-9 hours trek up to the “Meteostation” crossing Gergeti glacier. Harnesses and rope is needed. Overnight in the mountain hut (3680m). Day 10: Acclimatization day, easy walking around the slopes of Mt. Kazbek, exploring mountain areas. Overnight in Meteostation. Day 11: In the morning walk down to Kazbegi; meet the transport in Kazbegi and drive to Tbilisi. Day 12: Free day in Tbilisi. Day 13: End of the tour. Departure. |

Accommodation: - - 4 nights in Tbilisi at a comfortable 3 star centrally located hotel. - - 1 night in Shatili at a simple family guesthouse. Bathroom is shared. - - 1 night in Kazbegi at a comfortable tourist class hotel in twin rooms. - - 1 night in mountain hut former "Meteo Station". - - 4 night in tents. Meals: - As specified in the itinerary: B – breakfast, L – lunch, D – dinner. Guiding and the Staff: - - An English speaking mountain guide throughout the tour. - - Experienced cook for adventure tours. - - Local assistants on trek. - - Excursion guide on city tour. Transportation: - - Depending on the group size we use the following transport: for transfers to/from the mountainous areas: 4x4 car or a minibus. For city tour in Tbilisi we use comfortable car, minibus or a bus. - - Airport transfer included. |
Group support and equipment: - - Horses to carry all group and personal equipment on trek. - - Tents (2 – 3 persons share a tent). - - Kitchen facilities and stoves. - - Dining tent; portable tables & camp chairs. - - Plate, cup, spoon, fork, etc… Entrance fees: - - All entrance fees to the sites and museums. The Price Does Not Include: - - Other services, meals or alcoholic drinks unless specified in the itinerary. - - Tips and extras in the hotels. - - Personal clothing and equipment (sleeping bag and mat, boots, etc.) - - Any insurance. Important Notes: - Single room accommodation in the village houses is possible but limited according to the availability. Single tent can be provided upon request. Extra charge for a single tent is: EUR 30. - Please, limit your personal luggage on trek to max. 20 kilograms in order to allow horses to carry your luggage.
